Session Highlight
Ukraine Environmental Sustainability Planning Guidelines
8:30 AM, Sunday, April 14, in Room 101 HIJ
Do you want to hear how the Ukraine Rebuilding Action Group of the APA International Division, using a Research Grant from the Divisions Council and working with other Divisions and other organizations in the US, Europe and Ukraine, were able to complete for Environmental Sustainability Planning Guidelines to “build back better” in Ukraine? And how our work was relevant, feasible and effective?
Come to our session at 8:30 AM on Sunday, April 14, in Room 101 HIJ. The guidelines are already available at Sustainability.URAG.org.
On April 14, you will hear how we took a multi-scale, multi-timeframe, approach to develop easy-to-follow, step-by-step methodologies to address environmental sustainability challenges in sector-specific as well as integrated and holistic ways that planners and other local government officials can use in Ukraine. The resulting guidelines utilize the UN Sustainable Development Goals (the “SDGs”) and align with the UN Habitat Urban and Territorial Planning Guidelines for local environmental sustainability.
The comprehensive planning guidelines include three parts: 1) background and context for
building back better - before and after war environmental baselines; Ukraine and EU planning laws and institutions; relevant international aid planning projects; and UN SDGs and planning Guidelines; 2) holistic and integrated planning for the “Regenerative City” - new concepts, content, and practice for sustainable cities; and 3) sector-specific environmental sustainability planning modules - hazard mitigation, disaster response, and resilient infrastructure; green buildings, spaces and cities; land contamination and waste management; water resources and river basin planning; and sustainable transportation.
We will also explore with the audience how we can promote and facilitate use of the guidelines by Ukrainian local planners and officials. We look forward to seeing you there!
